When I published my first book, Building a Protestant Left, I had high hopes that it might be widely read and could bridge various gaps in constructive ways.
And indeed I was widely reviewed, on balance appreciatively, and I picked up important readers. So I should not complain too much.
But this also was a disappointing moment, not least when I became embroiled in a kerfuffle among people I badly needed as allies. One might say "all publicity is good publicity," but in this case this only proved partially true, if at all.
I wrote about all this in an essay which is now hard to track down. Sometimes I want to share it with folks. So I'm throwing it up here for whatever this is worth.
