Mark's Music Project
I play and compose music with piano, voice, and guitar.
I'm not sure what to call the genre--it's a synthesis of wide listening--but maybe it's some sort of contemporary folk with quite a few jazz chords and fairly complex rhythms.
I always try to pick the best song for any occasion--concert, educational presentation, jam session--so I play both covers and originals. One of my distinctive strengths is a repertoire of music for left-of-center churches. I also try to push forward old-school "protest" music in fresh ways.
Alongside wholly new songs, I've also honed skills at creating new lyrics for existing tunes: translations from other languages, words for instrumental tunes, and useful revisions of older lyrics.
My goal here is to share the fruits of this labor--especially originals that you likely won't find elsewhere.
Meanwhile, my scholarship on music sometimes blurs with music I play. Writings that fall in this gray area belong here too.
